Welcome to the third issue of disKRAZE the voice of Disc Sports in Ontario. We hope that the summer finds you in good spirits and enjoying seasonal disc activities, be it disc golf or ultimate. This newsletter will update you on recent happenings within your Provincial Sports Organization (where we are at, what we are doing and, importantly, where we are going!) Enjoy!
DISCANADA held it's 2nd annual general meeting at Olympia Sports Camp in Huntsville on May 20th in conjunction with Toronto Ultimate Club's Ultimate Long Weekend event. Although the weather was sketchy, all attendees had a great time. At the AGM, the North was well represented by North Bay, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. We also had attendees from Ottawa and Toronto. Our agenda had the important task of voting to approve newly proposed AIMS, BYLAWS and CONSTITUTION which had been distributed in advance. Due to insufficient representation from all key areas across the Province, it was motioned that the vote be sought via alternative means with a vote date of June 15th, to allow for a truly democratic adoption of the new statues. All agreed and this was accomplished online with unanimous approval.
As you can see from the new logo which is in final refinement stages (i.e. colourization and font selection) our quest to adopt a name which better reflects who and what our association is has been successful. Going forward, based on member feedback, we have launched our new identify: ONTARIO DISC SPORTS ASSOCIATION - ODSA for short. We believe this name will better serve our interests and objectives. The website address will change to www.ondisc.org. BOOKMARK THIS TO YOUR FAVOURITES FOLDER!
Bank accounts, insurance policies along with government registration currently will remain as DISCANADA and will transition in the near future. Insurance, riders will be forwarded to all parties concerned when completed.
DISCANADA made application to the Ministry of Health Promotion - Sports & Recreation Branch on May 29th requesting $30,000 in funding for a 10- week Cool & Fun Disc Sports Tour. This outreach program has the objective of teaching disc golf and ultimate throughout the province, targeting Grades 7 & 8 students, to help build a solid grass roots system in support of future growth potential for our clubs and leagues. We are optimistic that full approval will be extended and will know the final outcome early July. Stay tuned!

As part of the Sports Development Initiative - SDI Cool & Fun Disc Sports Tour we require two facilitators to go "on tour" to teach the masses. Our requirements are simple. We are seeking 2 high energy individuals with drivers licenses, who are bondable and available for an 11-week contract between September 5th and November 11th 2006 (includes 1 week of training). We are looking for individuals who will wear provided branded apparel (which you'll be able to keep - worth $1250 for each person). Salary is $600 per week per individual for 11 weeks, plus an additional $30 per day (or $210 per week) for food and beverages for each of the 10- week tour. An additional $25 per week for laundry (or $250 in total for the 10 weeks) will also be provided. In addition, all lodging, transportation (rental vehicle) and fuel will be provided.
The 2 instructors will be required to travel together to various cities and towns (itinerary provided) throughout Ontario, visiting schools and teaching grade 7 & 8 students. The program focuses on flying disc skills (throwing and catching) and presenting video or DVD instruction on disc sports skills and game overviews. Each class, averaging 30 students, will then be engaged in a game of Disc Golf or Ultimate. All materials for both students and teachers will be high quality and professionally produced. A total contract fee of $8950 per person will be available (in addition to sponsor provided clothing and shoes). This is a 7 day a week, 11- week commitment. Depending on the home bases of successful candidates and the itinerary, most weekends (which are fully paid) will be spent traveling. Interested candidates are asked to email Christopher Lowcock at president@ondisc.org or call 416-822-6368. Resumes are required. Consistent with Ministry policies, background checks must be conducted on all candidates put forward. This will be an awesome job, with the opportunity to see your Province and teach your game to future disc golf or ultimate players. Skill upgrading will provided for both disciplines during the 1 week of training.
This email has been sent to members of member clubs that used the online club registration services, Barrie Ultimate League - BUL, Bronte Creek Disc Golf, Sault Ultimate Players Association - SUPA and Sudbury Ultimate Club - SUC. ODSA is proud to report that 1 of the 2 Canadian's entered in the 2006 Japan Open cracked the top 12. Playing against some of the best players in the world, Michael Sullivan part of the ODSA executive and one of Ontario's legendary disc golfers came out of retirement for this event and did us proud. Kudo's to you Michael and stay out of retirement please, we need you on all fronts. Brian Hoeniger was the other Canadian however he was listed as an American, I guess because Brian now lives in Georgia as he acts as the fulltime Executive Director for the PDGA.
