Dear Friends,
ODSA1
As we move into the heat of August, we're counting down to the CUC '07 event in Toronto, which sets the stage for some awesome Ultimate. On the Disc Golf front, the PDGA Worlds are set to go in Wisconsin. Ontario teams and individuals are ready to compete in both events. We wish all our athletes the best and know they will make us proud!
CUC '07
CUC07Seven days to the start of Canada's largest Ultimate championship ever! Toronto and the beautiful Sunnybrook Park will play host this auspicious event from August 9th through to the 12th. Click the logo to the left to see a list of just under 80 teams that will be competing from across Canada. The winners of the 5 divisions (Juniors, Masters, Mixed, Open and Womens') will proudly represent Canada at the World Championships in Vancouver in 2008. Best of luck to all, may Ontario rule at the worlds next summer!
PDGA '07 Worlds
PDGA WorldsWisconsin has been playing host to the disc golf world since July 24th, by first hosting the 2007 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships followed by the 2007 PDGA Pro Worlds. The Pro Worlds are staged at the Highbridge Hill Sports Complex and the Whitecap Ski Mountain. Click the link to the left to learn more about these championships, the amazing courses and particularly one of the holes (which is listed as longest hole in the world at 1325', rated as a par 6). Many Ontario players are competing in this event and should place well. Again, best wishes to Ontario athletes for a strong showing! To see how our athletes are doing at the Pro Worlds or how they finished at the Amateur Worlds, just click the link titled "Canadians at Worlds" in our 'Quick Links Section'. This document has been created by the Chair of the ODSA Disc Golf Council, Don Lane, who is also the PDGA Manager for Canada.
OTF Grant Application

OTF
On July 1st the Ontario Disc Sports Association made application to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for a grant to provide operational and program funding over the the next 3 years. If successful, these funds will support the hiring of a full time Executive Director, plus a number of new initiatives to build growth, play and membership. Some of these initiatives include working with the Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association to introduce ultimate (along with the creation of wheelchair ultimate rules and play) and working with CUPA and the NCCP to develop ultimate coaching certification.  In addition, ODSA would role out initiatives to work with parks and recreation departments to install more disc golf courses through out the province, and hire a recreational coordinator to travel to northern communities (towns and cities), to meet with aboriginal peoples and to coordinate visits to day and residential camps to introduce disc sports. Other sport related initiatives include the creation of a series of regional events leading towards a provincial championship for both disc golf and ultimate.  If successful, the funding would become effective November 1st, 2007.  Look for further updates!  We are "ON THE MOVE"!
ODSA RADD FUNd Raising Initiative
We are excited to announce a new initiative where ODSA will be creating a series of four colour discs both on the Ultimate and Disc Golf front. Our aim is to sell 2800 discs between now and the end of the year. We will introduce our first disc, that will sell for $20, at the CUC 07 event.  Look for it at the GAIA tent.  With your help, the goal to generate $28,000 by the end of the year will be reached! This money will be used in 2008 to launch our Regional Athletic Disc Development (RADD) Series. These are events/tournaments that will take place regionally (in Ontario east, north and south) and will culminate with a provincial championship for both disc golf and ultimate. Our first Ultimate disc celebrates the spirit of Ultimate and the three regions of Ontario. Please help in supporting our efforts and purchase one at this years nationals.

Discs we be available to be purchased online after the nationals for $25 which includes the shipping charge!
RADD Series
As mentioned above, ODSA is working to create a series of regional tournaments in 2008. These will be referred to as the RADD Series or Regional Athletic Disc Development Series, and will create a new level of competition within key regions of Ontario. Details are still being worked out as to formats and timelines and you can count on further updates.  We are working through the ODSA Disc Sport Councils to bring on a major sponsor and to create a fun format that will potentially see teams and/or individuals earn points by attending these events, which would then be applied to allow those individuals or teams to compete in the slated provincial championships. Winning the provincial championships will bring not only the prestige of Gold but a rewarding experience through apparel, service and/or product credits with ODSA partners. If anyone is interested in running an event in your community in conjunction with the ODSA in 2008, please contact us at president@ondisc.org! Remember:  these do not have to be new events, they can be tournaments that already exist that can be incorporated into the 2008 RADD Series!

Both Disc Golf and Ultimate will have 3 regional events leading up to a provincial championship. These regionals will take place in each of the 3 defined regions of Ontario as follows:
Eastern Ontario - from Peterborough east to Ottawa and north to Huntsville and Barry's Bay
Northern Ontario - the northern portion of the province, including Parry Sound, North Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie and north
Southern Ontario - the Greater Toronto Area, south to Niagara and Windsor, north to Orillia and Owen Sound

We've selected the acronym RADD as our catch phrase moving forward into 2008. We will host the RADD Series, we've launched the RADD FUNd and we are finalizing our RADD Tour (School Outreach Program).  So far, the feedback has been great and we are excited about all of our initiatives. As you can see, ODSA is working hard throughout the province to make a difference and bring disc sports to the forefront as an alternative activity. Please help us make that difference by supporting our efforts. We ask you to purchase one of our discs at the upcoming CUC 07 Nationals or anywhere you see our discs available. The money we make from the sale of these discs goes right back into programming and events. In other words, by purchasing a disc, you're investing in the future of our sports, while helping to make ODSA a strong and vibrant organization that is focused on education and expansion of play throughout the province! We together can make RADD happen! The Skies The Limit!

Sincerely,

Christopher Lowcock
