Dear Friends,

As we wind down summer and gear up for fall, ODSA wants to share some exciting news and updates, along with how Canadian and Ontario teams and individuals fared at recent major events.

ODSA1
Although we hoped to announce this news much earlier (beginning of July), remember that we are now dealing with governments and their funding timelines. The good news is that the Sports Development Initiative grant that we applied for in May has now finally been approved and the money is in the bank! (drum roll please!!) Due to the 2 month Government delay in approving our grant, ODSA'S outreach program is set to roll just after Thanksgiving in October.

We are also pleased to announce that we have two excellent instructors that have put their lives on hold in order to deliver this program to select grades 7 & 8's in various schools across the province over the 10 week period from October to December. We had some great candidates. ODSA is pleased to announce the instructors as Johnathan Gravel from the Sudbury ultimate community, a seasoned ultimate player originating from Canada's East and Dusan Nedelko from South River. Dusan was the creator of the Tom Thompson Park disc golf course and is the PDGA contact. Both are excited about the opportunity to bring this program forward and we are pleased to have them aboard. More news on the program will follow in September.
CUC2006boat
I recently travelled to Halifax for the 2006 CUC event and to attend the CUPA AGM (to rattle the cage a bit!). This is a great opportunity for league organizers from across the country to meet to discuss the progress of ultimate in Canada. The weather was great & the crew from HURL did a bang up job - all attendees had a great time. 43% of the teams out of the 51 that attended were from Ontario and we had some first place finishes in the Master's, Open and Women's divisions. Hats off to BDU from Ottawa along with Goat and Lotus respectively from Toronto for winning their divisions. Also Congratulations to all Ontario teams for their attendance and placing.

Next summer Toronto will host its third Nationals at Sunnybrook Park from August 9th through to the 12th. Toronto hosted past Nationals in 1988 at York University and in 1996 at Sunnybrook Park. Sunnybrook Park and Toronto were also hosts to the 2nd WFDF World Ultimate Club Championships in 1991. More to follow on this event, in September.

PDGAWorlds
Two major disc golf events took place recently with the PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma from July 25-29 and the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships in Augusta, Georgia from August 9-12. Canadians ranked well going into both events...canadian-dg-ranking-june-30- 2006.pdf To view all the event results, click below to see the pdf's. Nice work to Don Lane and company from Ottawa for putting this data together.

Toronto will again play host to a major disc golf event in 2007 on the newly redesigned course on the Toronto Islands. This event will take place in early July. More to follow on this event in September.
