Punxsatawney_Phil Dear Disc Gophers,
With Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow earlier this week, the promise of winter sticking around for weeks and weeks grows greater.  But don't let that bring you down...

What went under-reported was that Dan Ginnelly saw his shadow too!  And that could only mean the sun is out in Scottsdale, AZ, and that The Memorial is in only four weeks away!

As the official start of the PDGA National Tour, and unofficial start of the disc golf season, the 364 pros and ams (and all the fans and support staff) who will be traveling to the desert March 5-7 have the promise of shorts and palm trees to keep them warm on these middle-of-winter days.

We hope this week's eNewsletter can also light a fire for you, too, as we introduce our PDGA Magazine, discgolfer, announce the World Premier of our latest promotional video, suggest three easy ways to "Keep it Green," and reveal who that shadow is in the PDGA logo.

Thanks for all your great support as an active 2009 PDGA member...you are an active 2009 PDGA member, right?!

Old PDGA Moniker Goes Modern for Membership
discgolfer_mag_mast

The new PDGA publication is discgolfer, a full-color glossy magazine that will be wending its way into members' mailboxes this spring. Edited by long-time publisher, Rick Rothstein, discgolfer reprises the name of the first PDGA newsletter that was created in 1987. It will be under the artistic direction of Kent Johnson, who collaborated with Rick for nearly 10 years at Disc Golf World News. Other staff members so far include Gregg Hosfeld, John Whinery, and Scott Papa. An editorial advisory board is also being formed to offer guidance and story suggestions, in addition to critiquing each issue.

The discgolfer staff will be reaching out to PDGA members for stories and ideas, such as a photo essay featuring interesting dyed discs. Please end your high-res photos of your coolest dyed discs to stories@pdga.com. Maybe your disc will make the cut.

PDGA_Square_LogoPDGA Logo "Shadow" Revealed
Legend from Michigan Provides the Silhouette
Thanks so much to all 84 PDGA members who responded to the PDGA Logo puzzle.  No it was not Stork or Climo or Juliana or Rivers Sherrod or Johnny Sias or Barack Obama or Mike Randolph (which I mistakenly advised our World's DVD crew) or Stokely.

Who fills the logo, lo-and-behold, is Ken Gill (# 3549) from Michigan.

Clearly, the "old-schoolers" and the Michigan crew are well aware of this, as I heard from the likes of Javier Kowalski(#3178), Scott Martin (#5560), J. Gary Dropcho (#2734), Eric Vandenberg (#3089), Mike Politz (#34804), Drew Bray (#7408), Alan Urban (#36583), Zachary Vaughn (#24946), and Larry LaBond (#6903).

Most enjoyable was hearing from the Gill family themselves, who provided some interesting background on the image.  Brother Joe Gill (#3550), who was one of the first to respond noted that Ken was wearing his tasseled golf cletes in the picture, which was taken Kandahar Park in the Detroit area (a course that no longer exists).  Also noteworthy is that Ken was putting with his old reliable...an 86 Softie using the follow-through that his wife, Marie, notes is now being followed by their 12 year old son, who proudly displays the logo on this bedroom door!

The logo itself was the creation of past PDGA Board member, Kristi VandenBosch (#7867) originally from Ann Arbor, now in Santa Monica, who spearheaded publicity for the PDGA back then.  Her work continues to provide the representation for our association and is a moniker that we are all proud of.

1. Refill Your Water Bottles.  If 2/3 of sports fans refilled, we'd save over 300,000,000 plastic bottles a year.

2. Use the Power Management Mode on your computer.  You can save up to $75 a year by enabling low-power sleep modes on monitors and CPUs.

3. Get Your IRS Tax Refund Electronically.  $135 billion in returns amounts to 54,000,000 envelopes and checks the IRS has to print, stuff and deliver per year.
