2007 marked the 50th anniversary of the flying disc. From pass-time to professional sport, this evolved disc has granted ability to play many sports such as Ultimate and Guts Frisbee. Who would have thought that a metal pie tin could be the basis for a range of serious competitive sports? The infamous Frisbee® disc, the plastic flying toy developed and marketed by Wham-O, Inc., was originally inspired by a pastime at Eastern colleges dating back to the 1920's, in which pie tins from the Frisbie Baking Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut were thrown around by students. The eventual marriage of people to plastic has now matured and at a venerable fifty years of age, the plastic flying disc has been transformed from toy to sporting implement of the future. Along with other new order sports such as hand-gliding, windsurfing, and skateboarding, disc play embodies the space age - flight, freedom, exploration and ephemeral control. Disc sports are as diverse as those played with balls and far more innovative, as they often make use of the natural elements as well as the skill and prowess of the participants. There have been some strange twists along the way though; among the many landmarks in the world of flying discs is the time the U.S navy laid out $400,000 to test the flying disc as a means of keeping flares aloft. Types of discs varying in weight, profile, control and flight characteristics have evolved at an exponential rate to meet the needs of each sub-discipline.
With over 450,000,000 sold worldwide, and 160,000,000 people having thrown them, it's no wonder that the that the fiftieth anniversary of these captivating saucers is being celebrated with great fervor both in it's birthplace and abroad.
For five decades, a simple round piece of plastic has captured the continent's imagination with it's ability to spin, flip and speed through the air. Come on, give it a try! Do what those first Pluto Platter Frisbees encouraged us to do...Play, catch and invent new games!
